Introducing Our New Sermon Series:
The book of Hosea is about the unfailing, unwavering and undying love of God - a love that never wanes, regardless of the beloved’s condition or response. It traces God’s unrelenting pursuit of His beloved Israel, who had left her first love for the wanton ways of the world.
Israel was enjoying a time of economic prosperity and political stability under King Jeroboam II (782 to 753 BC). But that period of unprecedented material plenty (since the time of Solomon) became the cause and conductor of their spiritual poverty. They became the children of their era as they indiscriminately imbibed the values of their age, absorbing its obsessions, fixations and excesses.
The prophet Hosea (“salvation”) was called to act out God’s love. He was to marry Gomer, a prostitute, as an active metaphor of God’s unflinching love despite Israel’s spiritual adultery and idolatry. But it was not a soft and spineless sentimental love. Embedded in his message is a tough warning of judgment and an urgent call to repentance. Hosea’s eventual reconciliation with Gomer serves as an expectant personification for the eventual reconciliation between God and Israel.
Christians, like ancient Israel, can be mesmerised and seduced by what the world has to offer. There are many deceptive and devious lovers out there seeking to woo us away from the supreme love that is the core of our existence.
For the next three months (May to July), we will be exploring the timeless message of divine love, reconciliation and redemption. Please tune in and be blessed!
